Merve

I am Merve and I am from Türkiye.

I have been living in Austria for almost two years. I came to Austria to discover my true self, improve my skills, and for my master’s studies. Alongside that, I am also active in NGOs and projects that focus on intercultural dialogue, creativity, and empowerment. These projects give me a sense of belonging and allow me to contribute while learning new skills and developing myself for my future self.
I had the chance to participate in several REMCREAD workshops in Graz, and each of them was such a unique and enriching experience.

Here a few thoughts about some of them:

I joined the Paper Marbling workshop, and it was the first time I tried this art form; it is like EBRU in Turkish culture. It felt enjoyable to watch colors dance on water and transform into beautiful designs. What I loved most was not just the art but also the connection in the room of women experimenting and celebrating creativity together.

Then came the Botanical Painting workshop. We used leaves and acrylics to create nature-inspired pieces. The process was calming, almost meditative, and the atmosphere was so warm. We exchanged stories, enjoyed each other’s company, and realized how much beauty can come out of simple things like a leaf pattern and a bit of paint.

More recently, I attended the Smartphone Photography workshop with Iulia. I was surprised by how much I learned in just a few hours: understanding light, building a soft box, and experimenting outdoors. It wasn’t only about taking pictures but also about seeing the world from a different perspective. The fact that it took place during Women’s Week made it feel even more special.

Altogether, these workshops were not only creative lessons but also safe spaces for women from different backgrounds to connect, support one another, and share laughter.
For me personally, these workshops were more than just learning new skills. They gave me confidence and reminded me of the importance of creativity in everyday life. Living in a new country can sometimes feel isolated, but being part of this kind of project showed me that there are communities where you can feel welcomed and valued. It helped me find inspiration and gave me tools that I can carry into other areas of my life, even in my professional journey.
My advice to other migrant or refugee women who are new in Austria and are looking for a community, a hobby, or even to start a creative business – and might be interested in joining workshops Remcread.

My advice to other women who are new in Austria is don’t be afraid to join. I know sometimes it feels challenging to step into an unfamiliar environment, especially when you are already adjusting to a new country. But these workshops are warm, inclusive, and truly empowering. They are a chance to meet inspiring women from different cultures, to learn something new, and to enjoy the simple happiness of creating with your own hands. Who knows what starts as a hobby might even turn into ideas for a future project.
